Ancient Sri Lanka is a 6-night, 7-day round trip that takes you to most of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka — including the ancient city of Anuradhapura (Sri Lanka’s first kingdom), the ancient city of Polonnaruwa (the second kingdom), the rock fortress of Sigiriya built by King Kasyapa, the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, and the Golden Temple of Dambulla with its remarkably well-preserved ancient mural paintings.
On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, our representative warmly greets you and escorts you to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first ancient kingdom. Here you’ll observe the monumental ruins of royal palaces, Buddhist temples, and monasteries that have stood for over two thousand years.
After breakfast, continue exploring Anuradhapura. In the afternoon, visit Mihintale — the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Climb the Mihintale rock and enjoy a breathtaking sunset from the summit. The rest of the day is yours to relax.
Proceed to Sigiriya and climb the iconic Lion Rock — a 5th-century fortress crowning a sheer granite peak. En route, visit Ritigala, an ancient forest monastery, with an optional climb of nearby Pidurangala Rock for spectacular views of Sigiriya. The rest of the day is yours.
Head to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second ancient kingdom, to explore the ancient city and the magnificent Gal Vihara rock-carved Buddha statues. Observe the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden city created by King Parakramabahu. Enjoy an optional jeep safari in Minneriya National Park to see wild elephants.
After breakfast, visit the Golden Cave Temple of Dambulla, famed for its ancient murals and Buddha statues. Continue to Kandy, the last royal capital, to visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, enjoy a traditional cultural dance, and take in Kandy Lake and the Kandy Viewpoint. The rest of the day is yours.
After breakfast, enjoy an optional visit to the Udawatta Kele Forest or the Peradeniya Botanical Garden. Visit Ambekke Dewalaya to admire intricate wood carvings from ancient times, then explore the historic Gadaladeniya and Lankatilaka temples. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure.
