Nine Arches Bridge

The 30-meter-high Demodara Nine Arch Bridge is a popular attraction in the mountain village Ella Sri Lanka. The bridge was built between the Ella and Demodara stations during the British colonial period. Ella’s Nine Arch Bridge stretches 91 meters and stands 24 meters high. This massive bridge is built entirely of solid rocks, bricks, and cement, with not a single piece of steel used. The bridge was ultimately open to the public in 1921.

According to folklore, World War I broke out just when works on the bridge started, and the steel consignment designated to this location was seized and repurposed for war-related projects. When the construction came to a halt, P. K. Appuhami, a resident of Melimada’s Kappatipola district, suggested to complete the bridge out of stone bricks and cement, without using steal.

There are various routes from Ella’s town center to the Nine Arch Bridge. The most popular of them is a stroll along the train tracks from the Ella train station.
