The Founder’s Story
From California Hotel Desks to Sri Lanka’s Hidden Trails
Hi, I’m Nirash Fernando, the founder of Ceylon Hunt. Before I became a travel entrepreneur, my life looked very different. For 12 years, I lived and worked in the United States — ten of those years spent deeply embedded in the hospitality sector as Front Desk Manager at the Quality Inn in Thousand Oaks, California.
“That decade wasn’t just a job — it was a masterclass in human connection. I learned exactly what makes a guest feel welcome, what travelers look for when they’re far from home, and how premium service can transform an ordinary trip into an unforgettable memory.”
Then came 2019, and with it, the global shift of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many, I found myself reevaluating my path. I made the pivotal decision to move back home to Sri Lanka. While the world had slowed down, it gave me an unexpected gift: time.
With an open schedule and a deeply rooted love for my homeland, I packed my bags and started traveling extensively across the island.
As I explored the mist-shrouded hills of Nuwara Eliya, the ancient ruins of the cultural triangle, and the pristine beaches of the south, I began writing. I started a travel blog to document the raw, authentic beauty of Sri Lanka — sharing hidden gems, local eateries, and off-the-beaten-path routes.
During a time when travel information was uncertain and confusing, my blogs became a trusted lifeline for travelers navigating the island. I wasn’t just listing destinations; I was guiding them through an experience. The turning point came when I realized I could do more than just write — I began actively connecting with passionate, knowledgeable local guides who knew the terrain better than anyone else.
I took my 10 years of American hospitality standards, combined them with my firsthand exploration of Sri Lanka, and built a platform designed for the modern adventurer.
