The Dalada Perahera, also known as the Kandy Esala Perahera, is one of the most spectacular cultural and religious festivals in the world. Held annually in the historic city of Kandy, Sri Lanka, this grand procession honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, which is housed in the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa).
Why the Perahera Is Special
“Perahera” means procession, and this one blends Buddhist and Hindu traditions. The festival lasts for 10 nights, featuring drummers, dancers, torchbearers, and beautifully dressed elephants, including the Maligawa Tusker, who carries a golden casket symbolizing the Tooth Relic.
